Overview
A retired couple seeking to consolidate their living requirements so they can remain in their familiar and favourite location. They are also looking to accommodate their adult son with special needs requirements in a way that would provide them all with some degree of independence. Located in dense inner suburban Fitzroy North, the existing home is a double fronted edwardian on a relatively generous sized block with two street frontages. The proposal is for an addition and alterations to upgrade the existing home with a new independent unit at the rear of the block on a separate title. Both properties need to be low maintenance, practical, energy efficient and designed for easy access. Using the constraints of the surrounding context, the proposal maximises available sunlight to the new living spaces. It uses simple pragmatic materials and recycles the bricks of the newly demolished garage to integrate with the existing robust fabric of the rear street.
