Overview
The house is located in a new suburban subdivision which is adjacent farmland and on the fringes of this coastal town. This essentially single level house is raised to enable an easier relationship between the living spaces and the higher, flatter rear of the block, and to also provide an elevated street presence. The entry is signified by a gap between the two elevated abstract forms of the house, and provides the destination for a journey through a native garden at the front of the property. An “L” shaped plan separates the private and public zones of the house, enabling abundant afternoon sun to penetrate the living spaces whilst also protecting the rear outside spaces from south westerly winds from the nearby ocean. Protected views to the south along a native reserve towards the ocean are provided for the bedrooms and a roof terrace. The natural timber cladding will weather over time, allowing the building to settle amongst the growing native vegetation, providing a gratifying visible contribution to this new part of the town.
